"Its just like a city", says Joe
Beatty, JCA's supervisor at Michigan International Speedway. Beginning
June 13th, Michigan International Speedway (MIS) will host its first of
three race weekends at their facility near Brooklyn. JCA's staff during each race weekend reaches a peak of 35 paramedics and EMT's on race day. Nine paramedic ambulances are also assigned to the track. The paramedics staff ambulances at each turn on the race course, as well as in roving teams in the grandstands and infield. 180,000 guests and staff are expected on race day. Michigan International Speedway provides an infield care center on site, which is staffed by emergency physicians and registered nurses. The staff at the center, which has most capabilities of a hospital emergency department, treats race fans with minor injuries and illnesses. Serious medical problems are directly transported to Foote Hospital in Jackson, or other area hospitals upon request. Dr. John Maino, Director of Foote's emergency department, also serves as medical director of MIS. According to Beatty, JCA paramedics see a variety of medical emergencies, including heart problems and traumatic injuries. Many race fans camp at the facility during the weekend, so JCA's presence is "around-the-clock". JCA is part of a regional EMS system, which makes serving MIS easier, according to Beatty. JCA affiliates in Washtenaw County (HVA) and Lenawee County (LCA) providing staffing and vehicles for the track. They help us cover this special event, while we continue to provide EMS services to all of Jackson County," says Beatty.
